KENTUCKY EXPORTS INCREASED BY 17% (17.2%) IN 2002 (Frankfort, KY) Success in today's economy requires a world view. Exports keep over 3,850,000 Americans working and Kentucky's companies are quickly becoming competitive players in the global marketplace. Last year, Kentucky companies sold more than $10.6 billion of goods overseas. That is an increase of 17%, compared to most other states, (the United States declined by -5.2% in exports from 2001) (21 States had a percentage increase in exports from 2001, while 30 states plus the D.C. had declines in exports) which had some kind of decrease in exports. This accounts for about ten percent of the state gross product and provides manufacturing jobs for an estimated 38,000 workers. Approximately 35,000 additional jobs in non-manufacturing industries are indirectly sustained by manufacturer's exports. For 2002, it is estimated that Kentucky's exports directly create 38,300 manufacturing jobs, indirectly create 35,200 mfg. jobs, and induce 39,200 mfg. jobs. Additionally, it is estimated that Kentucky total exports account for more than 46,300 total direct jobs, (total) indirectly create 37,400, and (total) induce 41,600 jobs in Kentucky. Kentucky's export growth rate in 2002 was the 3rd largest of all 50 states (plus the District of Columbia). Kentucky has had the 6th largest increase in exports since 1997. The Commonwealth is the only state in the top ten (exports per capita) that does not have a border with another country (Canada or Mexico) or a major port of entry/exit for products. The average annual growth rate in Kentucky exports from 1997-2002 was 33.4 % compared to the flat overall growth rate of 0.8% for the United States. Kentucky is ranked first for the exporting of livestock and livestock products. The transportation equipment industry sector is Kentucky's largest export segment with exports totaling $4.47 billion in 2002. Major importers of Kentucky's transportation equipment included: Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The remaining top ten export industries include chemicals, computer & electronic products, machinery, fabricated metal products, electrical equipment, primary metal manufacturing, non metallic mineral products, plastics and rubber products, and livestock & livestock products. "Kentucky maintains trade offices in Mexico and South America to help Kentucky companies find opportunities in these increasingly important and lucrative markets," stated Mary Beth Warner, Director of the International Trade Division. Kentucky's Estimated Export Related Gross State Product by Industrial Sector: 2002 Values in $1,000
The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development is the primary state agency in Kentucky responsible for creating new jobs and new investment in the state. New business investment in Kentucky in 2002 totaled more than $3.2 billion with the creation of nearly 13,000 new jobs.
