Locating and Expanding in Kentucky
Several new and expanding industry announcements have been made in
Kentucky over the last two months. Here are highlights of just a
few:
General Electric (GE)
 GE has announced
it will build its new line of energy-efficient, hybrid electric water heaters
in Louisville, creating approximately 420 jobs. Gov. Beshear and the Kentucky
Cabinet for Economic Development were instrumental in luring the new product
line to GE's Appliance Park in Louisville, working in cooperation with
Louisville Metro Government, Greater Louisville Inc., and the IUE-CWA union
representing GE's workers. GE will invest over $69 million in the product
design and facility construction necessary to make the hybrid electric heater
at Appliance Park, along with several other investments to be made at Appliance
Park over the next several years. Read full story here.
KHI Foods, Inc.
KHI Foods, Inc. announced it will locate a wholesale food manufacturing
facility in Owen County. The project will create 32 new jobs and
represents a capital investment of over $1.6 million in the Commonwealth. Read full story here.
Safetran Systems Corporation
 Gov. Beshear
recently joined company and community leaders in Crittenden County to announce
the expansion of one of its corporate citizens. Safetran Systems
Corporation, part of the Invensys Group, a worldwide leader in railroad
crossing technology and crossing warning systems, will invest up to $2.8
million into its Marion facility, creating approximately 150 new jobs in the
Commonwealth over the next few months. Read full story here.
Sazerac North America
 Gov. Beshear and

Governor Beshear
Promotes Biotech in the Bluegrass
Gov. Steve Beshear
and economic development officials recently returned from a three-day economic
development trip to the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) international
convention, held this year in Atlanta, Ga.
The trip marked the second visit by Gov. Beshear to BIO and the ninth
consecutive year that Kentucky has exhibited at the convention, which draws
over 20,000 attendees and 1,800 exhibitors from more than 60 nations.
During his trip, the Governor hosted meetings with U.S. and foreign bioscience
and healthcare businesses that are interested in moving to Kentucky or are
considering new investments in, or partnerships with, the state. According to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2001 to 2005, Kentucky's bioscience and
human health sectors grew by 7,976 jobs (from 85,568 to 93,544).
"Turning our economy around depends in many ways on growing our community of
knowledge-based businesses and increasing research and development at our
high-tech companies and universities," said Gov. Beshear. "The annual BIO
convention is one of the world's largest gatherings of scientists, executives
and officials working in the high-tech field, and our presence affords an
excellent opportunity to promote our state to this national and global
audience."
On May 19, prior to departing for the BIO convention, the Governor visited the
Amgen Distribution Center in Louisville to tour the facility and meet with
employees. Amgen recently completed a $38 million expansion of the
pharmaceuticals distribution center, which opened in 1992 and now stands at
123,000 square feet of space.
The facility ships medicines created and produced by Amgen to hospitals and
other healthcare providers around the country. Amgen forecasts about $15
billion in revenues this year, and about 85 percent of the products it ships in
the United States pass through the Louisville center.

Two Kentucky
High-Tech Companies Earn Recognition
Two Kentucky high-tech companies that previously received funding from the
Cabinet for Economic Development have been recognized in separate competitions
judged by industry organizations.
Mersive Technologies, of Lexington, was judged one of the year's most
promising private technology ventures by Red Herring, a global media company
focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. ApoImmune Inc., of Louisville, was
named one of the top new vaccine developers during the second annual Vaccine
Industry Excellence Awards.
 Mersive, a leading
display technology company, is one of this year's "Red Herring 100 North
America," a prestigious list honoring some of the world's most promising
private technology ventures. The company has become a leader in the technology
display market by selling systems for commercial and military simulation
environments, as well as for education, engineering, and research and
development organizations. Mersive software solutions for calibrating
multi-projector systems facilitate ultra-high resolution displays using "off
the shelf" projection and computing equipment.
Mersive, in addition to an award from the Cabinet's High-Tech Pool, has also
received Phase 1 and Phase 2 grants from the Cabinet's Small Business
Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR-STTR) Matching
Funds Program, as well as an award from the Kentucky Enterprise Fund.
 Apolmmune, a
biotechnology company developing vaccines and immunotherapies (treatments that
regulate the immune system to fight disease), was selected as a finalist for
"Best Early-Stage Vaccine Biotechnology Company." The Vaccine Industry
Excellence Awards competition is held at the annual World Vaccine Congress to
recognize outstanding achievements by vaccine practitioners and stakeholders
across the global industry. ApoImmune's lead vaccine is ApoVax104-HPV, a
therapeutic vaccine for cervical cancer expected to be tested in human clinical
trials in late 2009.
ApoImmune, in addition to an award from the Cabinet's High-Tech Pool, has
received Phase 1 and Phase 2 grants from the Cabinet's SBIR-STTR Matching Funds
Program, an award from the Kentucky Enterprise Fund, and an investment by
Commonwealth Seed Capital, a non-profit entity established to invest state
funds in Kentucky's early-stage, high-tech
companies.

How Much Wood
Could a Sawmill Sell if a Sawmill Would Seek Help?
With
the help of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, a Monroe County
sawmill has seen an explosion in exports of its hardwood lumber to China.
Exports are under way to Mexico as well.
Roy Anderson
Lumber (www.ralumber.com) has enjoyed a 250 percent increase in
export orders to China since joining forces with the Cabinet in 2007.
The company has exported its products successfully for 25 years to the European
market, but had achieved only limited success in exporting its products to
China and Mexico.
The company's executive team wanted to take the next step, so they contacted
the Cabinet's International Trade Division for assistance. In May 2007, Roy
Anderson Lumber was one of two Kentucky sawmills chosen by the Cabinet's
Kentucky China Trade Center to host a hardwoods delegation from the Chinese
Ministry of Commerce.
"The company called us, saying they could use a little help breaking into
international markets, and we were eager to get them pointed in the right
direction," said Mark Peachey, director of the Cabinet's International Trade
Division. "I think companies are surprised at the degree to which we'll
go to help them land new business."
Shortly thereafter, the lumber company was able to negotiate the sale of three
shipping containers full of Kentucky hardwood to a Chinese buyer. (These are
the large intermodal containers seen in commerce the world over - used on
ships, semi trucks, and trains.) The company sold another 115 container loads
to China throughout 2007.
The Kentucky China Trade Center, as well as the Cabinet's International Trade
Division in Frankfort, continued locating new sales leads in China. In March
2008, the Cabinet provided space in the Kentucky booth at the 2008 Interzum
Wood Trade Show in Guangzhou, China, introducing Roy Anderson Lumber and other
Kentucky sawmills to several new buyers.
"Our China exports have really taken off over the last two years," said Lowery
Anderson, co-owner of Roy Anderson Lumber. "The assistance provided by
the Cabinet's International Trade Division and Kentucky China Trade Center has
been invaluable in our efforts to tap into new international markets."
The export surge
continued through 2008, with Roy Anderson Lumber selling more than 150 new
container loads of hardwood to Chinese buyers. The efforts continue today, with
Roy Anderson just returning from another trip to China in April.
Things have gone so well in China, in fact, that attention now turns to Mexico.
The company made two trips to Mexico in 2008, taking advantage of research and
"Blue Key" services (matchmaking and business appointments) offered by the
Cabinet's Kentucky Agricultural and Commercial Trade Office in Mexico.
Roy Anderson met with existing and new potential clients identified by the
trade office. The staff provided a customized itinerary for the two trips,
language and logistical help, assistance with contract negotiations and
follow-up quotes to new clients. When one of the company's shipments had
difficulty clearing customs, the staff intervened and followed the shipment
until it was safely delivered to the client.
Established in 1950, Roy Anderson Lumber currently operates sawmills in both
Monroe and Lincoln counties and employs a total of approximately 160
people.
Roy Anderson isn't alone. Thanks in part to the free services provided by the
International Trade Division, Kentucky companies are quickly becoming
competitive players in the global marketplace. Exports to foreign countries
contributed over $19.1 billion to Kentucky's economy in 2008, ranking the state
9th nationally in exports per capita. This business activity supports 49,000
direct jobs in the Commonwealth.

Sabert
Corporation Celebrates Grand Opening in Bullitt County
Gov. Steve Beshear joined company and community officials last
month in Bullitt County to commemorate the grand opening of Sabert
Corporation's new manufacturing facility.
Sabert Corporation, which manufactures disposable plastic food packaging, has
constructed a new 250,000 square-foot facility on approximately 72.25 acres in
Bullitt County.
"Today's grand opening of Sabert Corporation's newest manufacturing facility is
a most welcome addition to the Bullitt County community," said Gov.
Beshear. "The creation of dozens of new employment opportunities and a
multi-million dollar investment will have a tremendous impact on the
region. We are confident Sabert Corporation will flourish and prosper for
many years to come here in the Bluegrass."
The project represents an initial capital investment of $35 million in the
Commonwealth with additional investment to coincide with future
expansion. Company officials have indicated that the project will create
approximately 100 new manufacturing and distribution jobs during the first two
years, growing to several hundred jobs.
"We are very excited about opening this state-of-the-art facility in Kentucky,"
said Albert Salama, founder and president of Sabert Corporation. "With
its strategic location in the center of our country, we will be able to service
our many worldwide customers more efficiently. By being closer
geographically, we will be providing faster more efficient service, decreasing
our travel distances and consequently reducing our own carbon footprint.
We look forward to working with the people of Bullitt County."
The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority approved Sabert Corporation
for tax benefits up to $2 million under the Kentucky Industrial Development
Act, an incentive program designed to attract and expand manufacturing
employment in the state.
