Kentucky Showcased At The 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games
Governor Ernie Fletcher was on hand at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games earlier this month in Aachen, Germany. As host of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Governor Fletcher participated in the closing ceremonies, officially bringing the games to Kentucky.
“It was an honor to represent Kentucky and the United States at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games,” said Governor Fletcher. “We were there at the closing ceremonies as the mantle was passed from Germany to the U.S. It was the symbolic start of preparations for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.”
The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are the world championships of the eight equestrian disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), and are held every four years. The Games have never before been held outside of Europe nor have they ever all been held together at a single site; both firsts that the Kentucky Horse Park will achieve.
Approximately 800 athletes and 875 horses competed in the Germany games. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, which will be held September 25 - October 10, 2010, is expected to sell more than 500,000 tickets and have an economic impact of more than $150 million.
“We are pleased that Governor Fletcher not only attended the games, but was also a major participant in the closing ceremonies,” said the Secretary General of the FEI Michael Stone. “It is a long standing tradition at major sporting events of this type that the top public official from the next host site attend the event to not only link the events together, but to also reaffirm the ongoing public support that has been so helpful."
