Two Kentuckians Receive the 2006 Governor's Economic Development Leadership Award
Two distinguished Kentuckians recently received the Governor's Economic Development Leadership Award. The awards were presented by Governor Ernie Fletcher in Bowling Green during the KAED Annual Awards Dinner on November 9. The banquet was held in conjunction with the Kentucky Association for Economic Development’s (KAED) annual meeting.
“I congratulate the outstanding and talented recipients of the 2006 Governor’s Economic Development Leadership Award,” said Governor Fletcher. “The awards recognize those who have worked hard to create economic development opportunities in our state. These efforts have a tremendous impact on the commonwealth’s economy and improve the lives of thousands of Kentucky citizens.”
Recipients of the 2006 Governor’s Economic Development Leadership Award were:
John Hindman, Louisville, vice-president of public affairs and communications for UPS Airlines. Hindman manages the Air Group’s efforts to improve government and media relations and to strengthen the company’s reputation among the public and employees. A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, Hindman joined UPS in 1974 in Ames, Iowa, as a part-time car washer. Two years later, after receiving his bachelor’s degree in education from Iowa State University, he became a package car driver. From 1976 to 1993, Hindman worked in all phases of UPS’s package operations, managing the Des Moines facility and working in the West Region’s Marketing, Industrial Engineering, Human Resources, Employee Relations and Public Affairs departments. Appointed by Governor Fletcher to the Louisville Arena Task Force, Hindman chaired the Site Selection Subcommittee in 2006. Hindman serves on boards of directors for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Louisville Medical Center Development Corp., and the Boy Scouts of America.
Dr. James C. Votruba, Highland Heights, president of Northern Kentucky University. Votruba came to NKU in 1997 from Michigan State University, where he was vice-provost for university outreach and professor of higher education. Prior to his tenure at MSU, he was dean of the College of Education and Human Development at Binghamton University. Votruba earned a bachelor’s in political science, master’s in political science and sociology, and Ph.D. in higher education administration from Michigan State. He is a frequent lecturer, author and consultant in the areas of higher education leadership, strategic planning and public engagement. Votruba is president of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. His board service includes the National Campus Compact Board of Directors, the Association of Governing Boards Council of Presidents and the Board of Directors of the Ohio National Mutual Holding Co. He recently co-chaired Vision 2015, a Northern Kentucky regional planning process.
Since 1996, thirty-eight Kentuckians have received the Governor’s Economic Development Leadership Award, which were designed to recognize those individuals in Kentucky whose vision and leadership have been instrumental in improving our state’s local, regional and statewide economy. |
