Amgen Meets with
Kentucky Biotechs
Representatives from Fortune 500 company and biotechnology
pioneer, Amgen Inc., recently visited Frankfort on May 10 for a day-long
meeting at the Cabinet for Economic Development to listen to presentations by
selected Kentucky-based biotech companies about their new technologies. Three
Amgen executives attended the presentations, including Senior Vice President of
Global Development/Chief Medical Officer Will Dere, M.D., Vice President of
Process Development Dr. Joseph Halcomb III, and Senior Director of State
Government Affairs Kathy Feegel. Also presenting overviews of their research
and development activities were the vice presidents of research from the
University of Kentucky (Dr. Wendy Baldwin, Ph.D.) and University of Louisville
(Dr. Nancy Martin, Ph.D.).

biotechnology industry and has led the development of novel products based on
advances in recombinant DNA and molecular biology. The California-based company
continues to be an entrepreneurial, science-driven enterprise and is

Therapeutics is a clinical-stage specialty pharmaceutical company
developing small molecule pharmaceuticals, including a topical treatment for
cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.

Pharmaceuticals is developing advanced drug delivery systems to
diagnose and treat disease, including a bioadhesive berry gel to prevent and
treat oral cancer.
AllTranz performs
contract research and development for high-quality therapeutics, including
pharmaceutical topical and transdermal formulations.

Therapeutics is a specialty pharmaceutical company developing nasally
delivered drugs to treat pain and disorders related to the central nervous
