Kentucky Receives Silver Shovel Award from Area Development Magazine

For the second year in a row, the editors of Area Development magazine acknowledged those states that have been among the most successful in creating new jobs and securing investments in new and expanded facilities. Kentucky was recognized among the elite group as a recipient of its Silver Shovel award in the 3 to 10 million population category.

To determine the award recipients, Area Development magazine’s editors contacted each state and asked for verifiable information about the 10 top job-creation and investment projects that were actually initiated in the state during 2006.  Projects submitted had to actually have "broken ground," i.e., began construction or expanded a facility and initiated new hiring, to be considered for the award.

Each state was then rated based on the following five weighted factors: direct job creation numbers; new jobs per capita; company investments; number of new facilities (either new to the state or at new locations within the state); and the number of projects creating high value-added jobs.

States were compared only with those in one of three similar population categories. In each category, Area Development chose the states with the top three weighted scores to receive its runner-up Silver Shovel awards. Area Development’s article about the award can be read in its entirety at the following site: http://www.areadevelopment.com/annualReports/jun07/goldshovel.shtml.

Founded in 1965, Area Development is the leading executive magazine covering corporate site selection and relocation. Published bi-monthly, it provides valuable information about the factors and issues that affect a successful decision to its 45,000-plus executive subscribers.
